About Prosteosol-D Tablet

PROSTEOSOL-D tablets combine tamsulosin hydrochloride 0.4 mg in sustained-release form with dutasteride 0.5 mg. It is used in men to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH), such as a weak stream, difficulty starting and needing to pass urine often or urgently, and to lower the risk of urinary retention and prostate surgery.

Take one tablet a day, about 30 minutes after the same meal each day, exactly as your doctor prescribes. Tamsulosin starts working within days, but dutasteride can take several months to have its full effect. Common side effects include dizziness and changes in sexual function. It is for men only; women and children should not handle broken tablets.

Therapy category: Urology care.

Uses of Prosteosol-D Tablet

  • Moderate to severe symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH)
  • Reducing the risk of sudden inability to pass urine (acute urinary retention) and the need for prostate surgery

Benefits of Prosteosol-D Tablet

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate

As the prostate grows, it squeezes the urine tube, causing a weak stream, straining, dribbling and frequent trips to the toilet, including at night. Tamsulosin relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck so urine flows more easily, often within days. Dutasteride gradually shrinks the prostate, giving further improvement over 3 to 6 months.

Lower risk of urinary retention and surgery

By shrinking the prostate over time, dutasteride reduces the chance of suddenly being unable to pass urine and of needing prostate surgery. Taking it regularly, as your doctor advises, gives the most benefit.

Side effects of Prosteosol-D Tablet

Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if they continue or worry you.

  • Dizziness, especially when standing up quickly
  • Difficulty getting or keeping an erection, or reduced sex drive
  • Changes in ejaculation, including less semen
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Rarely, a prolonged and painful erection (priapism), which needs urgent medical help

How to take Prosteosol-D Tablet

Take one tablet a day, or as your doctor advises, about 30 minutes after the same meal each day. Swallow it whole with water; do not chew, crush or break it.

How Prosteosol-D Tablet works

PROSTEOSOL-D combines two medicines that work in different ways. Tamsulosin is an alpha-blocker that relaxes the smooth muscle in the prostate and at the neck of the bladder, making it easier to pass urine. Dutasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that lowers dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that makes the prostate grow, so the prostate gradually shrinks.

  • Tell your eye surgeon that you take, or have taken, this medicine before any cataract or glaucoma surgery.
  • Use a condom if your partner is or may become pregnant, as dutasteride passes into semen.

  • Remind your doctor that you take it before any PSA blood test, as it lowers PSA levels.

Warnings and interactions

Safety details must be checked against the current pack insert and advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Warnings

  • It can cause a sudden fall in blood pressure when you stand up, leading to dizziness or fainting, especially at the start of treatment.
  • Dutasteride lowers PSA levels by about half, which affects prostate cancer screening. Your doctor will take this into account and may check you regularly.
  • Before cataract or glaucoma surgery, tell your eye surgeon, as tamsulosin can cause 'floppy iris syndrome' during the operation.
  • Report any breast lumps, pain or nipple discharge to your doctor.
  • Get urgent medical help for a painful erection that lasts more than 4 hours.
  • A slightly higher rate of heart failure has been seen with this combination, so tell your doctor if you have heart problems.

Contraindications

  • Women, children and adolescents
  • Severe liver disease
  • A history of dizziness or fainting caused by low blood pressure on standing (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Allergy to tamsulosin, dutasteride, other 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors such as finasteride, or any other ingredient

Important interactions

  • Other alpha-blockers, such as prazosin, alfuzosin or doxazosin, must not be taken with it.
  • Erectile dysfunction medicines such as sildenafil or tadalafil can lower blood pressure further and cause dizziness.
  • Strong CYP3A4 blockers such as ketoconazole are not recommended, and CYP2D6 blockers such as paroxetine need caution, because they raise tamsulosin levels.
  • Tell your doctor if you take warfarin or medicines for blood pressure.
