About Ursoram-125 Suspension
URSORAM-125 suspension contains 125 mg of ursodeoxycholic acid, a bile acid, in every 5 ml of a flavoured liquid that is easier to take for children and for people who have difficulty swallowing tablets. It is used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones and to treat certain long-term liver conditions, including primary biliary cholangitis and liver problems linked to cystic fibrosis in children.
Shake the bottle well and give the dose your doctor prescribes, which is usually based on body weight, using the measuring cup provided, preferably after meals. The most common side effect is soft stools or diarrhoea. It is a prescription medicine and should be used under a doctor's supervision.
Therapy category: Hepatobiliary care.
Uses of Ursoram-125 Suspension
- Dissolving cholesterol gallstones in people whose gallbladder is still working
- Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)
- Liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis in children
Benefits of Ursoram-125 Suspension
Cholesterol gallstones
Ursodeoxycholic acid lowers the amount of cholesterol in bile, which allows small cholesterol stones in a working gallbladder to dissolve slowly. This can take several months, so give it regularly for as long as the doctor advises. The doctor may arrange scans to check progress.
Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)
In PBC, the small bile ducts inside the liver are gradually damaged and bile builds up. Ursodeoxycholic acid improves bile flow and protects liver cells from harmful bile acids, which can slow the disease and improve liver test results. It is usually taken long term.
Liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis
In cystic fibrosis, thick bile can block the small bile ducts and damage the liver. Ursodeoxycholic acid helps bile flow more easily and protects liver cells. In the UK the liquid form is approved for this use in children from 1 month to 18 years.
Side effects of Ursoram-125 Suspension
Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if they continue or worry you.
- Soft stools or diarrhoea (the most common side effect)
- Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Itching or hives
How to take Ursoram-125 Suspension
Shake the bottle well before each dose. Give the dose your doctor prescribes, usually worked out from body weight, using the measuring cup or syringe provided rather than a kitchen spoon, preferably after meals. Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry, dark place, away from light and moisture.
How Ursoram-125 Suspension works
Ursodeoxycholic acid is a bile acid that occurs naturally in small amounts in the body. It reduces the cholesterol that the liver releases into bile, which helps cholesterol gallstones dissolve. It also replaces more harmful bile acids, improves bile flow and protects liver cells from damage.
